This year's contest is aimed at 17-year-old European students

20/5/2008

The European Commission has recently announced that it will be organising the second Juvenes Translatores translation contest in November 2008. Open to European students born in the year 1991, the contest aims to reward the EU's finest young translators and to make young people aware of what translation involves.

European schools will be able to register for the contest via the Juvenes Translatores website between 1 September and 20 October 2008. The schools that will actually take part in the contest will be selected by means of a draw held after the latter date, and will be invited to register up to four students before 12 November. It should be noted, however, that the contest only envisages the translation of texts into any of the EU's 23 official languages, representing just a fraction of the linguistic diversity of Europe, where many other tongues are also spoken.

About last year's contest

The first Juvenes Translatores contest was held in 2007, and over 1,000 17-year-old students took part in it. The 27 winners (one from each EU country) travelled to Brussels to attend an award ceremony in the presence of Leonard Orban, the EU commissioner for multilingualism.

The contest's rules are available from its official website.
